South Wellington Heritage Day Sep. 18th 2016

South Wellington Heritage Day

Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, Noon – 4 p.m.

At the South Wellington Community Hall 1555 Morden Road 

All past and present residents are cordially invited

A time for former residents to get reacquainted.  Bring along any memorabilia, snapshots, etc. to share for the day.  Enjoy an afternoon of reminiscing at our biennial gathering.  For new residents it’s a great chance to learn about your community, visit with your neighbours and enjoy all of the historical displays.

Light refreshments will be served.

We would be very grateful if you could help us by passing our invitation along to the rest of your family or your neighbours in the event that they have not been included in our mailing list.

Changes to LDHS website

Just wanted to thank everyone who has supported this attempt to create a new website for the Ladysmith & District Historical Society.

Due to other commitments and interests, I am stepping down as the Technical Coordinator for this site. While there might be a brief lull in new content being added I’m sure other members will get this site running smoothly again in the near future. Good luck with it

Additions to website – July 2016

During the month more audio files from the Knight Collection were added. We hope to add to this when volunteer Chris Adams returns from his trip to England as he has been reviewing the vintage recordings to better determine content. We also want to confirm copyright status of these recordings.

Two articles have been added to the people and families section, one is a 1997 article contributed by Rollie Rose about Cliff Tollefson, former owner of the Ladysmith landmark Travellers Hotel. To go directly to the page click on The Challenges of Being Cliff

The second article is about Ladysmith Native son Bob Timothy who passed away this month. The article was contributed by Vince Herkel on behalf of the Ladysmith Horseshoe Club and provides Bob’s history of the creation of the HorseShoe Pitch facility in Transfer Beach park.

Bob is recognized as the founder of the Transfer Beach Horseshoe Pitching facility and in his honour, the Ladysmith Horseshoe Club has initiated a fund raising campaign called “A PARK BENCH FOR BOB”
Their goal is to raise $2500 in order to place a memorial bench at the Horseshoe pitch at Transfer Beach. Donations in any amount would be appreciated towards that goal

Sad to Report

The Ladysmith & District HIstorical Society is sad to announce that it lost two volunteer members in the Society, both on July 23

Long time member Ruth Weeks passed away suddenly at home joining her husband Ken. Both were active members in the Society.

Museum volunteer Taher Rampuri never recovered from the surgery he wanted in order to feel better and stronger according to his wife, Shamin who is also a volunteer at the museum.

LDHS wishes to extend the sympathy of all members to the families of Ruth and Taher.

 

People, Website Additions

Additions to website – June 2016

The minutes of the May 2016 Board of Directors meeting have now been approved and are available to view in the Members section of the website. Requires logging in with a password

We have started our oral histories section which appears in the Maps and Media section. There are two Audio pages, one entitled Audio – Knight files which contains the older recordings which were part of the Knight collection and were transferred over from cassette tapes to mp3 format suitable for displaying on the website.

So far this page contains two of these older recordings. There are many more coming. Watch for our article in the coming months about Nathan Dougan and the 1900 Trainwreck just north of Ladysmith. It will be added to our Transportation section.

The second audio page contains an interview with long time Ladysmith resident, former owner of the Chronicle and Mayor Rollie Rose. Rollie and Helen moved to the Okanogan in June to be closer to family. Here’s hoping Rollie will continue his Ramblin’ ways and come back to visit often.

We plan to add to this page interviews done with other long time residents who have contributed so much to this town. Suggestions welcome!

Two articles contributed by museum curator, Bernardien Knol were added to the Our Stories section of the website. One concerns the 30th anniversary of Ladysmith Downtown Revitalization Project and the other is about the efforts to create the Ladysmith Museum on its 5th anniversary.

Home Town Tourist History

Amongst the many happenings taking place this weekend (June 18 & 19), for the Home Town Tourist campaign sponsored by Take 5 magazine, history buffs will be especially interested in the following two events.

The museum is located at 721 First Avenue and the Legion is at 621 First Avenue so they are only a block apart.
