317-321 1st Avenue

317-321 1st Avenue was originally built in 1901, making it one of the oldest extant buildings in Ladysmith. It is currently occupied by Chopstix Salon.

It was originally a residential house with an attached store. It is now a single commercial building.

Former resident Hilary Hansen told us that:

“I lived across the street from the Walkem, and Hall Buildings! Starting in 1946. Our address number changed three times in the years my Mother owned it. 118 First Avenue, 110 First Avenue and finally 321 First Avenue!

It recently has become a [Hair] Salon… the little shop beside it [note: 317 1st Avenue], also ours, was a Taxi Business , and a Fish and Chip Shop “Queen Dot’s Cafe”… and several Restaurants thereafter… then it was Francis’ Shoe Repair and finally an Antique Store! [My mother Sold [the building] in the early 1990’s !!”

Hilary Hansen also provided these family photos of 317-321 1st Avenue:
